Who should avoid microblading?

Permanent makeup is safe for most people, but a few conditions and situations mean it should wait — or need a doctor's clearance first. This applies to microblading, ombré, combo brow, lip blush, and permanent eyeliner alike.

Common Reasons To Wait Or Skip It

Talk these through honestly at your consultation.

Should wait or get clearance

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infection, rash, or irritation in the treatment area
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Taking blood thinners or medications that affect clotting
  • Used isotretinoin (e.g. Accutane) within the past 6–12 months
  • A history of keloid or excessive scarring
  • An autoimmune condition that affects skin healing
  • A known allergy to pigments or numbing agents
  • Active cold sores (for lip blush specifically) — see below

What to do about it

  • Mention any of these at your free consultation — before you book a paid session
  • If a condition needs a doctor's clearance, bring written approval to your appointment
  • For lip blush with a history of cold sores, an antiviral prescribed by your doctor beforehand is a common precaution
  • When in doubt, ask before you book — it costs nothing to check

This isn't medical advice

This list covers common, general reasons permanent makeup may need to be delayed — it isn't a complete medical list, and it doesn't replace a conversation with your doctor. If you have any health condition you're unsure about, ask your physician before booking, and mention it at your consultation so Velma can advise honestly on whether now is the right time.
